Night Watch

The idea for “Night watch came from one of my paintings which depicted a smaller angel statue like the one here. I felt the figure demanded a larger scale to reflect its fundamental symbol of protection. Over the past few years, fear has been a dominate force in my life, but one simple truth has held me: God gives protection and peace. Without this knowledge, creativity could not flow and hope for an anxiety-free future wouldn’t be available. Now in a new season, I am thankful to say that fear doesn’t rule my life. The process of painting these internal struggles has aided in overcoming them.

This painting stands out as arguably the most visually complex piece in the collection. Not only due to its large size, but also because of the many layers of overlapping patterns created by a mix of oil pastel, oil paint and colored pencil. These contrasting elements speak to the mind which bounces between fear and trust. The angelic figure which dominates the composition, encourages the notion that trust can prevail. Moreover, symbol-packed motifs like bridges and trees are meant to provide hope within the chaotic landscape.
