  • “Gibson Flats” is named after an apartment complex in Austin. Apartments have intrigued me since childhood, as they were my first glimpse of freedom and adventure. However, over the years, negative experiences diminished the nostalgia that once surrounded them. 'Gibson Flats' explores both dreamy and dark memories of significant places, emphasizing the contrasting impressions of these memories.

As a child, I moved with my mom and sister to the apartments after a difficult season, and they became a magical place. Our backyard expanded to the size of the entire complex as we formed everlasting friendships and discovered underground tunnels leading to imaginary worlds. Later, during one of life’s cloudier seasons, I returned to the apartments, but this time, I did not belong. The doors and windows became mere illusions of a home behind the walls. The first memory is vivid, full of fun and protection, while the other is so unwelcoming that it crushed the childlike awe that places like the apartments once provoked. The 'Gibson Flats' is situated between wonderment and apathy.

Sight into the windows isn’t permitted, but the scene outside bursts with life. The brightly colored plants and the companionship of angels reflect curiosity and warmth, representing the former memory. Conversely, the grim trees and black void evoke danger, portraying the latter. The bridge provides an escape from the current impression into the possibility of renewed wonderment. This symbolizes hope that as we change, so can our perspectives.
